The groom’s cake is a small cake that is designed in honor of the groom. The most popular choice is chocolate, but the flavor is completely up to you. Traditionally, the groom’s cake will be placed next to the wedding cake. Commonly given as a gift from the bride, the groom’s cake may be presented at any time during the wedding celebration. In some cases, it is even included as one of the layers in a tiered wedding cake.

After the groom’s cake has been presented, a toast is often given to the groom. Guests who have a sweet tooth will especially enjoy a savory piece of chocolate cake. For them, special miniature versions of the groom’s cake can be prepared and given at the wedding reception.

Just as the tradition says that a bride who keeps a piece of her wedding cake will have a happy marriage filled with love and faithfulness, it is said that a woman who sleeps with a slice of groom’s cake beneath her pillow will dream of her future groom. With most wedding traditions being focused on the bride, many grooms enjoy having a few traditions that are exclusively theirs.

Traditionally, the groom’s cake is smaller and is not tiered as a wedding cake would be. A single layered round or sheet cake design is the most common. Planning of the groom’s cake should be much more than just the shape and flavor, but should also include something of special meaning to the groom. If he is a sports fan, an appropriate theme to coordinate his favorite choice would be ideal. If he is an outdoorsman who enjoys fishing, the cake designer can look for embellishments to create a themed cake in celebration of a favorite hobby or activity.

As a final thought to selecting the groom’s cake, it is not necessary that this be kept as a secret in order to surprise the groom. Instead, he will likely enjoy helping with the selection process and the overall design of the cake. Afterall, the groom’s cake is all about the groom. Even though surprises are grand, the gesture alone will be much appreciated and will turn some of the spotlight on the prince of the day. As is tradition at most weddings, the bride is the princess and all eyes are upon here. The groom’s cake and the garter toss are the two main traditions reserved specifically for the groom, so take a moment to consider how they can be made extra special
