While many brides get excited about their weddings, they don’t think very much about having problems with their bridesmaids. But most bridesmaids do have trouble managing their bridesmaids. Asking your friends to help you with one of the most important days of your life often puts a bit of pressure on your friendship. Knowing how to manage your bridesmaids and still be good to your friends is an important skill every bride should have.

Your bridesmaids are not unpaid personal assistants. Bridal magazines and television shows may joke about Diva Brides but acting too much like a diva is likely to have your bridesmaid in an uproar. Your bridesmaids often have jobs, personal lives, families and other obligations in addition to helping with your wedding. You can’t expect bridesmaids to be at your beck and call.

Choose bridesmaid tasks that compliment each of their skills. Likely you know your bridesmaids well. You know your sister Janice is good with numbers and your friend Nancy is a decorating wizard. Use these abilities when choosing wedding tasks. Don’t put Nancy in charge of calling vendors for pricing information. Put her in charge of visiting florists and picking out the flowers.

Manage your own stress so your bridesmaid relationships are healthy. Your bridesmaids likely want to be there to support and nurture you. But they can’t do it all. The bride who doesn’t sleep properly, eat healthy or take care of herself is doing a great disservice. She’s not taking proper care of herself and expecting others to do the basics for her when she won’t even do them herself.

Hold a “Thank You” event for your bridesmaids. This can be a lunch, brunch or Girls Night Out. Whatever you think your bridesmaids would appreciate and whatever you can budget for. But do something to thank your bridesmaids for their hard work on your wedding. And simply to hang out and have fun. Isn’t that why you chose them to be your bridesmaids?
